I read this article on Buzz Feed and it was shocking disturbing. As a reader and writer of MM Romance, I’m well aware of how much violence is projected towards men. A lot of people think that because they are men they can deal with it and it’s not that big a deal. They see women as small and fragile, so when a woman suffers violence of any kind everyone jumps to the rescue to help them as much as they can. But when a man suffers violence, from another man or a woman, there isn’t the same reaction. It’s assumed that he’s done something to deserve it, that it’s for a reason or they think that he can cope because he’s supposed to be big and strong. No-one thinks about the emotional burden or the fact that NO VIOLENCE should ever be tolerated. No matter who it is against or why.
If you don’t believe me, check out the article here. It shows you what happens when two actors play out violence in the middle of a busy street. The first fight has the man being violent to the woman and then the second fight reverses the roles. The outcome and the reaction of the public will shock you. And it should.
If you want to do something to help, there are charities you can donate to, that will give men a safety net. Somewhere they can go, or someone they can call to talk about what is happening to them. Don’t assume anything. Domestic abuse can and does happen as much to men as it does to women, but our society doesn’t make it okay to talk about it or broadcast that knowledge. That’s wrong! We need to let these men know that they’re sadly not alone and there are people out there who support and love them, who will stand up for their rights to live a safe and happy life.
