Bodyguard

.

.

Following Orders could have come under quite a few letters, but I thought ‘bodyguard’ was the most appropriate. The whole point of the story is that Christian has a sexuality-awakening when ordered to go undercover as Duncan’s boyfriend. But, in reality, he’s acting as his bodyguard, as a favour to Duncan’s father, who is Christian’s boss.

Because Christian was a homeless teen, basically in hiding and with little resources, he’s spent his entire life believing that he’s asexual, and he has a slightly narrow-minded view of what that means. Yet, it’s only when he meets Duncan that he realises he was lacking the appropriate information to figure out what his true sexuality was, and he had yet to meet someone who created that spark of attraction and sexual awakening, that would help him figure out who he really was.

And, as he only met Duncan through his job as a bodyguard, it felt appropriate to place it here. Without that job, without that purpose, Christian would continue to live a life of uncertainty and loneliness. Being a bodyguard literally changes his life.
