Triggers

.

.

Triggers is the only word to explain Underneath It All. The story began without any hint of the triggers that eventually slipped into the final novel. I never really intended to include triggers, but the story demanded them. Darren was one of those characters who truly took me by surprise. He began something that I had never planned or expected.

Giovanni’s story began in Right Kind of Wrong, where he discovered that he has schizophrenia. That alone was a trigger requirement and I knew that in Underneath It All, I wanted to explore how he coped with that, which meant therapy and treatment. When Darren entered the story, I always knew he would have a secret, but I never expected that it would be so tragic or brutal. When he finally told me all of his story, I was sobbing even as I wrote it.
