Sample Saturday: The One That Got Away

A new feature for 2021, in which I give a chapter sample of one of my available books, to give you a taste of what’s in store. Apologies for starting it in the middle of the year. I fell really behind schedule with a lot of things, this year.

Since Chapter 1 / the Prologue of my books can be found in my WIP posts, I’m going to use the 7/7 Challenge (where authors post seven lines from page 7 of their WIP) as inspiration. I’ll be posting (approximately) 7 paragraphs of page 7 (unless they have spoilers, then I’ll choose the previous/next chapter) If more is needed, for context, then I’ll add more.

Bradley Coates was nothing more than an eighteen year old with an ego. There wasn’t anything he couldn’t do and get away with. Then he went after loser geek Rory: the only guy who could ever be the sub to his dom. Not that he knew what that really involved, back then.

Twelve years later, an accidental meeting brings them back into each others orbit. Things didn’t end well before. Can they end well now? If one night is all they have, how can there be anything wrong with making the most of it?

But their chance meeting will drag the old demons out of the closet and force Bradley and Rory to face some harsh realities they’d rather not face.

Can Bradley finally capture the one that got away?

now, they were in Rory’s bed. Naked, after a night of explosive reconnecting. A night they should never have had. A night he thought he’d never have.

What had they been thinking?

All that mattered now was the empty space beside him, where Rory should be lying. He sat on the edge of the bed, elbows on his knees and head in his hands. He looked so lost that Bradley wanted to do something to help, but it was pretty obvious that he was the problem.

“Running again?” Bradley asked, against his better judgement.

He was ignored, though he detected a frown and the tightening of Rory’s jaw. A scoff surprised him, then Rory shook his head and gripped the mattress hard.

Bradley had known it wasn’t any more than one night, but it didn’t mean he wasn’t disappointed.

Rory had made it clear, twelve years ago, that no amount of money in the world could buy his love. So why had Bradley spent all those years building his father’s empire, making a name for himself and making sure he could afford the best of everything? He always knew it wouldn’t make a difference, but he guessed maybe a larger part of him than he’d like to admit had hoped it might.

Choosing to face the past and try to fix what he’d once broken, Bradley sat up. “You never used to run away from me.”

“I never used to have a reason to.”
